Seeing Life through a Cosmic Perspective
By Rev. Elizabeth A. Reed, Ph.D.
Here is one person's experience in a larger vision — seeing human life, and everyone living out her or his life purpose, seeing from the Cosmic Perspective...
The noted astronomer Carl Sagan delivered a public lecture in 1994 at his alma mater Cornell University. As part of the presentation, he presented a photo taken by Voyager 1 in 1990 taken when the spacecraft was 4 billion miles from earth. NASA directed Voyager 1 to turn around, "look back" and take photos of the various planets it had "visited" in its mission. Voyager was about to leave the Solar System now that the mission was completed. In the photo, the earth is smaller than one single pixel of the photo. Earth appears as a pale blue dot, an infinitesimal point of light. Moved by this perspective and view of our planet, Sagan gave this speech.
A Spiritual Perspective ~ Vision Changing Experiences
"But exactly how does one go about "thinking like the Universe," or "seeing through the eyes of God," broadening our vision to perceive the patterns underlying our lives? ...The mind of the Universe is accessed through
nonordinary states of consciousness — those wordlessly profound transpersonal dimensions described by the great mystics. It is our encounter with this "other reality" that catalyzes a dramatic shift in perspective, widening the lens of our individual psyches and revealing the immense scope of the Divine point of view. Such expanded states of consciousness are not illusory." ~ Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan,
Thinking Like the Universe
This quote by Pir Vilyat (also found in the
beatitudes course, lesson thirteen)
reminds us of the times we have experienced similar kinds of "vision changing" experiences. Once our vision is shifted, once we see through the lens of seeing the Divine everywhere, the challenge is maintaining this perspective moment by moment in daily life. As the Quran says, "Wheresoever you turn, there is the face of God (Sura 2: 115)."
Once we see through mystics' eyes, the "ordinary" becomes "extraordinary."
Once we learn how to enter
meditative states of consciousness,
little of the tumult experienced on the surface of life can disrupt the deep inner calm of our essence.
