Let the Shaman Elder take the talking stick and listen to his words.
"When a child my mother taught me the legends of our people; taught me of the sun and sky, the moon and stars, the clouds and storms. She also taught me to kneel and pray to Usen for strength, health, wisdom, and protection. We never prayed against any person, but if we had aught against any individual we ourselves took vengeance. We were taught that Usen does not care for the petty quarrels of men."
~ Geronimo [Goyathlay] (1829-1909) Chiracahua Apache chief
The Way of the Shaman: Doing A Give-Away
By Shaman Elder Maggie Wahls
There are skills and attitudes you can embrace to create a better path for yourself, as the
Shaman healer.
In tribal traditions, a give-away is a ceremony in which a tribe member gives away some or all of his or possessions to clear out his or her life from the old things and to make room for new things. In many tribes, when a wife loses a husband it is very hard for her to manage supporting herself. So about a year after her loss she holds a give-away ceremony.
Everyone from the tribe comes to a give away feast that she has prepared. Many women bring a dish to pass. After everyone has eaten and had a good time, the widow presents each person with something that belonged to her husband. She may give his rifle to the best hunter of the tribe. She may give his pipe to the elder of the tribe. She may give a good fur to her girlfriend and so on, giving away the possessions of her husband. This of course will inspire those people to repay the kindness by bringing her corn during the harvest or venison during the winter, and many other gifts on like kindness, as she may need them.
How do you hold a give-away?
Make a ceremony of giving away old clothes you no longer need, furniture or decorations that you have had for a long time. Spring-cleaning your house is a give-away of sorts. You can also give-away your time as a volunteer for a group or charity. You will be making room for what you need now in your life by getting rid of those things you no longer need. You will be surprised at what no longer holds power for you.
Finding Balance ~ Healer, Heal Thyself
You must be healed first yourself to be a good healer for others. If you don't own your power, nurture your power, and protect your power then you have no tools to work with - and you are not
a Shaman.
Remember to be true to yourself and completely honest with yourself in order to find your true balance. Remember, what you need to stay balanced changes like the moon, which changes all the time. Nothing holds still. Not even the tiniest micron.
