Protecting our Food Sources

Last fall, genetically engineered (GE) pharmaceutical crops contaminated corn and soybeans intended for the food supply. Now, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) wants to set up a regulatory system that will allow companies like Prodigene and Monsanto to continue growing in open-air fields genetically engineered food crops, like corn, with human and animal DNA for drug production.

Because pollen and seed contamination cannot be controlled, open-air field tests of pharmaceutical crops threaten food safety. The only way to prevent our food from being contaminated with GE pharmaceutical crops is to stop the use of food crops for drug production and end open-air field tests.

Stop Global Warming!

Have you heard about the Climate Stewardship Act? It's a bipartisan bill in Congress to stop global warming. This is a landmark bill, and your help is needed to get it passed.

The U.S. Senate begins debate this week on a massive energy bill, and Senator John McCain (AZ) plans to offer his global warming legislation -- the Climate Stewardship Act -- as an amendment. Introduced by Senators McCain and Joseph Lieberman (CT), this historic bill is one of the most important chances we have to avert dangerous global warming. This bill must pass. No environmental goal is more important for the 21st century, and this week is key!

Save Our Children's Education

Across the United States, schools are suffering. Tens of thousands of teachers have received pink slips and looming budget deficits only promise worse to come. Who Own the News?

We the people do but this ownership is under threat.

On June 2, 2003 an important Federal Communication Commission vote is scheduled. This vote is not being covered by the mainstream news media since the corporations that own the news media would be the ones to benefit most from the passage of this vote to deregulate the media.

If the federal government weakens the rules for media ownership, a few, powerful media companies could gain greater influence over the news.

Most Americans depend on mass media - that is, television, newspapers, and radio -- to get the news, understand issues, and make informed political choices. What if a few corporations control this flow of information?
