Burning Calories, Laughing All the Way
By Lynn Shaw, Laughter Therapist
I teach a wellness class called Laugh-A-Size
TM, which comprises 40 minutes of a low-impact exercise program, toning and stretching exercises, and strength training with light weights. The participants are primarily over 40 years of age, female, and many experience high blood pressure, diabetes, joint tenderness, and low energy. We end the class with 20 seconds of laughter because Dr. William Fry found that 20 seconds of laughter is equivalent to 3 minutes of rowing a boat! We decided that constituted an aerobic activity!
After 6 months, several of the participants reported that their blood pressure readings were normal, their energy level higher, they were sleeping better, and their bodies were adjusting to the workouts requiring a higher level of intensity. Combining
laughter
with an overall
wellness plan
can enhance your
laughing heart.
