Issue 10 - November 2003 ~ Blessings Worth Counting
"When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and
strength. Give thanks for your food and the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving
thanks, the fault lies in yourself."
~ Chief Tecumseh, Shawnee Nation
OPENING REMARKS
Life can surely present challenges some days, months or years for
all of us. But the Thanksgiving Holiday remains a wonderful time to collectively acknowledge the
many gifts for which we can be grateful. In recognition of this upcoming holiday, we offer up this
short list of blessings. . . Love, Peace, Kindness, Compassion, Laughter, Health,
Healing, Breath, Water, Food, Home, Family, Friends, Life, Spirit/God/Goddess. . . Feel
free to add on to this list.
We truly hope you are able to count the gifts on this short list among your blessings this season.
Finally, we are grateful for YOU - be you a subscriber, student, affiliate, friend, and/or
colleague of Self-Healing Expressions. We count you among our many blessings.
Gratefully Yours,
June Soyka Cook, Founder

"There are thousands of Goddesses, from so many of the world's traditions, known by different
names and images, which represent the feminine aspects of divinity and also aspects of our
humanity. . . Their images, energy and just the mere concept of female divinity can heal us,
empower us, instruct us and help us find our way on life's rocky path."

Celebrating and Giving Thanks To Our Divine Mother

As we stand poised on the threshold of a changing world this Thanksgiving, it seems a fitting
time to remember and acknowledge the Divine Mother Goddess who helped bring forth the world.
She was long considered the Creatrix of all that is - the sustainer of all life - the nurturer
who from her body, the earth, provided nourishment and bounty for all. We are at a point in
history that calls both women and men to celebrate - and elevate -- the energy of the feminine,
along with the masculine. Spiritual law tells us . . .

"Writing testimony, to be sure, means that we tell our stories. But it also means that we no
longer allow ourselves to be silenced or allow others to speak for our experience. Writing to heal,
then, and making our writing public, as I see it, is the most important emotional, psychological,
artistic, and political project of our time."

Writing as a Way of Healing
Telling Your Healing Story
By Sandra Schubert

A woman I once met, named Sarah, told me her story of how she had once a successful practice as
a doctor until she suffered a major mental breakdown. Sarah shared the cause, her treatment and
the after effects of her illness. She would never be the same again. Her career as a doctor was
over. As we talked, I realized healing takes many shapes. Her healing was not becoming well
enough to practice again but . . .

~ Lynn's Laughter Blip for November ~
By Lynn Shaw, Laugh Therapist

How is your life today? No, I don't mean a dissertation on the philosophy of life. Think
about how you are living today. Are you aware of how you are breathing? Are you aware of
when you are smiling… or not? Are you aware of the color of the sky today? Are you aware
of the person next to you? I am frequently reminded of how easy it is to lose one's
awareness...and one's laughter. When that happens, it may be because we are rushing our
thoughts to tomorrow and replaying our thoughts from yesterday. We are not in the "now."
Granted, we can learn from contemplating yesterday and planning tomorrow. These learnings,
however, do not require our whole attention today. My challenge to you is to interrupt your
day with doses of laughter - maybe a small giggle, a quick chuckle. Each time you do, you
will step back into your awareness of today, the NOW, and the sound of your laughter.

Laughter for the Healing Heart.

"She was strong and real and messed up and wickedly honest. . .just like her mother. . . The
truth is hard. Sometimes it looks so wrong, y'know. The color's off, the style's wrong, but I
guess. . .I guess it's where the good ones live."

Grief Observed: Using Movies to Move through Grief
By Marty Tousley, Bereavement Counselor

Movies and video rentals that dramatize others coming to terms with their pain may serve as a
valuable tool to help you and your family members move through the grieving process. Healthy
grieving requires that we acknowledge, experience and express the pain of our loss. For many
of us, this is the hardest part of grief work, and we may prefer to put it off or avoid it all
together. Sometimes we need help to get started, both in getting in touch with the pain and in
finding the relief that comes from having a good cry. . .

"Sink into this moment and allow yourself to just 'be'". The
Dreams for Healing: Using Dreams As A Pathway to Your Soul
course has begun. Throughout this course you learn all
the basics of working with your dreams: colors, symbols, archetypes, the four dream types,
and even numbers and their meaning in your dreams. You can tell I'm partial to this section. . .
There are 22 lessons overall (each 2-4 printed pages in length - over 71 pages overall). You
can choose to receive them daily, weekly, or [bi-weekly]. I suggest you go for the weekly or
[bi-weekly] option, as it will give you adequate time to put what you've learned into practice.
There are exercises to help you along the way, and additional book resources as well as an
online dream journal form (use it to explore the details of your dream - it emails you back
your answers for safe keeping), a printable dream scorecard, and a color chakra chart. . .

"There is also a constant prayer of thankfulness - I am constantly thankful. The world is so
beautiful, I am thankful. I have endless energy, I am thankful. I am plugged into the source of
Universal Supply, I am thankful. I am plugged into the source of Universal Truth, I am thankful.
I have this constant feeling of thankfulness, which is prayer."
~ Peace Pilgrim, Activist who walked in the name of peace between 1953 & 1981
"God, give us thankful hearts in this season of Thy Thanksgiving. May we be thankful for
health and strength, for sun and rain, and peace. Let us to seize the day, and opportunity and
strive for that greatness of spirit that measures life not by its disappointments but by its
possibilities, and let us remember that true gratitude shows itself neither in independence,
nor satisfaction but in passing the gift joyfully on in larger and better form."
