Honoring Lakshmi Comments by Rev. Laurie Sue, author of Just Ask Lakshmi: Praying to the Goddess of Fortune and Discovering the Goddess: A Path to Healing, Spirituality and Joy Goddess Lakshmi comes alive this week during the Hindu holiday of Diwali (or Deepavali). Celebrated by many as the Hindu New Year, it is five day festival filled with sparkling lights, colorful saris, homemade sweets, visits with friends and relatives, prosperity prayers, and worship of the the Goddess of Fortune, Lakshmi. It happens each year on an autumn new moon. This year it begins on October 26, 2011. For those of you who are new to the Goddess, She comes into your life in addition to any other form of spirituality you hold dear. She comes to enhance who you already are and open a new way for you to see and know yourself; to heal and enrich your spiritual journey. This Month's Holistic Prayer Prayer to The Mistress of Riches It is suggested that this prayer be offered to Lakshmi on Friday, because that is the day that represents her planet, Venus. When offering this prayer before an icon or image of Lakshmi it is also appropriate to have icons or images of Saraswati and Kali. Together they represent the trilogy--the three worlds of the divine feminine. You are auspicious among all auspicious things. You are holy and fulfill our wants. You are the one to whom we surrender. You are the mother having three aspects of nature, You are the consort of Narayan. I bow down to you. ~ from Rituals and Festivals of India, by Tara Bapat, Focus Books, 1991 Happy Diwali!
