Issue 9 – October 2003 Ghosts, Night Terrors & Witches Brew
"Millions of spiritual creatures walk the Earth unseen, both when we sleep and when we wake."
~ John Milton, English Poet (1608-1674)
OPENING REMARKS
Every Halloween, in our little town of Lambertville, NJ, the old
Victorian houses on Union Street feature wonderful Halloween decorations such as ornately carved
Jack-O-Lanterns, spooky ghosts and witches. This tree-lined street is utterly transformed and one
feels as if they are in a Halloweentown for the evening. Many of these
homeowners also wear elaborate costumes to greet young Tricker Treaters. It's a scene.
As we gather items in our household for Maria's Halloween costume, (our 8-year-old is going to be
a flower child this year), I reflect on how this pagan holiday conjures up
thoughts of witches, ghosts and monsters for many. The stuff of nightmares! It therefore seems
fitting that this issue provides us with deeper insights into ghosts and spirits, nightmares and a
message about healing herbs from a green witch. Also in this issue Sandra Schubert, creator of
Writing for Life,
helps us understand how words and a pen can support our self-healing - from the stresses of
unemployment to cancer.

"Everything we have here, they have over there. There is a duplicate of this world except over
there the purpose is to develop the personality from the negative to the positive, or to give them
assignments or to send them down for some more education."

An Interview with Famous "Ghost Hunter" Hans Holzer

Every time I see an image of a ghost, goblin or Halloween witch I feel frustrated that we raise
our children to think that disembodied spirits are scary and to view witches as evil. Any student
of metaphysics knows that there is a world of helpers "on the other side," and this
includes those who have "passed over." They aid us, guide us, commune with us and,
occasionally, annoy us. However, just because they happen to be dead, doesn't mean they are
"ghosts."

NIGHT TERRORS: SCREAMS FROM YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS
By Laura Grace
|
|
Dreams are said to be the oldest language known to man yet for many they remain misunderstood.
For example, many fear and reject their nightmares; versus respecting and embracing them for the
important messages they hold. Night terrors are not only dreams where you are paralyzed with fear,
but are dreams where fear, upset, and anxiety are felt well into the waking state. Night terrors
do not happen over night; rather they are a result of several previous dreams that have gone
ignored. . .

easing the pain of labor, menstrual cramps, and effectively treating various uterine complaints."

Amazing Artemisias
By Susun S. Weed

Artemis - Goddess of the herbalist - gives her name to a genus of marvelously aromatic, safely
psychedelic, highly medicinal, dazzlingly decorative, and more-or-less edible plants in the
Asteraceae family. I love Artemis, and I love her plants. . .

". . .That writing does heal is unmistakable. It is not possible to be in the presence of those
who write their way through moments of ecstasy and moments of despair, critical illness and crucial
life choice, spiritual awakening and free-falls into Mystery, without acknowledgment of the truth
that writing heals."

Human beings have an innate need to express themselves from handprints left on ancient cave walls
to graffiti scrawled on public places. Some expressions reflect a desire to translate a high
principle and others only make sense to the creator. Nonetheless, we need to express ourselves
whether through the arts, work or our families. . .

"I feel better when I come off the stage than I do when I go on. When you're out there an hour
and 15 minutes with people laughing, it helps your whole body."

Falling of leaves may bring a falling of moods. Seasonal Affective Disorder impacts thousands of
people every year from October through March. If your mood is dipping, be aware that exercising
a minimum of three times a week between 20 to 30 minutes can help boost your mood. Laughter
exercises can also be an adjunct to a healthy outlook. Here's one to try: Lift the right corner
of your mouth and release. Lift the left corner of your mouth; release. Now lift both corners
simultaneously; release. Repeat until the awareness of what you're doing brings a smile to your
face and a chuckle to your heart. To learn more about laughter therapy and exercises, click the

Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and
sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim."

DEAR MARTY ~ I've lost two little lives. . .
~ Q & A by bereavement counselor Marty Tousley
|
Question: Recently I have lost my Oranda goldfish Jupiter. I loved him
very much. I did not know what he died of but I knew something was wrong with my gentle giant.
After he died, I took him out of the tank, wrapped him in some space-theme fabric and buried him in
the back yard. The following week, I discovered that my cockatiel's egg has hatched. I was so
happy! The little baby was doing just fine up until yesterday when it died. It is a little hard
writing this letter. I lost two little lives. I held both of them in my hands and now. . .

~ Closing Prayers ~
This Month's Holistic Prayers
Our salutations, adorations and prostrations to all those who have gone ahead of us, who have gained
more experience and who are before us as ideal beacon lights in life. Today we offer our adorations
to all those who are not visible to our physical eyes, but who lived on this earth-plane and who now
experience a different state of consciousness. We offer our gratitude to all those who have gone
before us and shown us the path.
~ Swami Krishnananda, (1922-2001) Prayer For Departed Souls
May He support us all the day long,
till the shadows lengthen
and the evening comes
and the busy world is hushed
and the fever of life is over
and our work is done -
then in His mercy -
may He give us safe lodging
and a holy rest
and peace at the last.
~ John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890)
