"The future need not be a repetition of the past. Frequently one is caught by a paucity of imagination which conceives of the future only in terms of rearranging past events or experiences that are already known. Persistent attempts to explain the unknown in terms of what is already known, can lead to blind repetition of unsatisfactory patterns that limit growth and restrict possibilities." ~ Frances E. Clearing Negativity: Challenging Negative Beliefs
By Melanie Votaw
Excerpt from her online life purpose course

Jan worked as a secretary for many years and complained constantly to anyone who would listen about how much she disliked her job and how much she really wanted to be an actress. But it took a lot of energy to hate her life so much, and Jan came home from work every night too tired to study or go to auditions. When she finally began to work on clearing her negativity, she not only had the energy to study, but her boss allowed her to take time off for auditions. She was suddenly much more content in her secretarial job, knowing she was on her way to fulfilling her life purpose.

How often do you feel positive about yourself, your life and the world? Do you spend a lot of time feeling dissatisfied and defeated? Today you are invited to try an exercise to help you identify and challenge negative beliefs so you can begin to release negative thought patterns.

What's causing my unwanted thoughts? Negative Film Playing in Your Mind
Our negative beliefs and feelings often play out in our minds like a movie we've seen 100 times. And even though we tune it out, we are still emotionally affected by the content. These negative beliefs are usually a result of something that has happened in the past. Fear tells us that we must brace against the same thing happening again, and this keeps us living in a state of defensiveness. A lot of energy is expended against something that will probably never happen, and even if it does, fear doesn't prevent it from happening. We simply waste a lot of energy preparing for the worst.

Working with Negative Beliefs ~ Managing and Minimizing Negativity
Part I: Write down a couple of your primary negative beliefs about the following.
For example:
"Making a living doing what I love is difficult."
"Wealthy people are selfish."
"I never have time for fun."
"If I follow my dreams, my family won't love me anymore."
"I can't do anything special."

Now, you try...

Here are some negative beliefs I have about....

Work

Money

Joy

Purpose

Meaning

Part II: Rewrite the Script
Now, practice turning each negative belief into a positive affirmation.
For example:
"Making a living doing what I love is easy."

Here are some new, positive beliefs I chose to have about...

Work

Money

Joy

Purpose

Meaning

Say these affirmation over and over, and listen for your mind to protest. Jot down the protest. Do you recognize any of the voices speaking in your head? Perhaps your mother? Your father?

Identifying the Origins of a Negative Belief
Families tend to create laws, which everyone within the family must adhere to. These laws, in turn, create beliefs that you assume are truths.
For example:
"You must be quiet when Dad comes home."
"All women are possessive."

Read the first belief that you wrote in the previous exercise (Part I), close your eyes, and ask yourself how old you were when this belief was formed. It might help to remember specific events from childhood that included family gatherings such as Thanksgiving.

Picture yourself in your mind at that age, and send compassion and love to the young person you were. Tell your younger self that this belief is not true, and you will now replace it with a more loving, expansive belief.

Notice if you feel any fear at the prospect of letting go of this belief. Usually, negative beliefs are a form of protection that you created to keep you safe when you were young and vulnerable. As you grow, that protection is no longer necessary.

Remaining Positive! Positive Attitude Tips
Before going to sleep each night, make a mental note of everything for which you are grateful. Even if the day has been difficult, remember to be grateful for your health, your dinner, your bed, and the roof over your head. Affirm that despite whatever dissatisfactions exist in your life, you have much that is positive and wonderful.

Negativity is pervasive in our culture. It takes constant vigilance to remain positive. Make a commitment to yourself that you will become more aware of your negative thought patterns and make a concerted effort to become more positive. Commit to reading your positive affirmations daily this week and see what happens.

As you make your energy more positive, practice viewing the world through that lens; see the light in everything and everyone. Notice how different you feel and how different the world responds to you.
