THE JOY OF COPING: WHEN DEBILITATING ILLNESS KNOCKS YOU FOR A LOOP
New E-Mail Course Supports Those Coming to Terms with
Disability or Debilitating Illness
February 2004, Lambertville, NJ -- The effects of a
disability or debilitating disease take hold of ones life with the suddenness of a violent
earthquake. And similar to the aftermath of an earthquake, a rebuilding is called for.
Just as we rebuild homes and cities, the person with a disability or debilitating disease
must rebuild and redefine his or herself. This is part of their healing journey.
To support people with the challenges that accompany this rebuilding of self, Self-Healing
Expressions, provider of self-help email courses, announced this month the launch of its
latest course entitled
"The Joy of Coping: When Disability Knocks You for a Loop"
by Arthur Soissons-Segal, Ph.D. This course was designed for those struggling with the
disabling effects caused by cancer, a brain tumor, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and anxiety
to name a few.
Dr. Soissons-Segal, is well qualified instructor for this course having been on of both sides
of the healing experience - as a brain tumor patient and as a therapist. On the subject of
healing, Soissons-Segal tells us, "healing is a process of
revealing the you that wants to be."
Over 21 email lessons, he guides the learner towards redefining their abilities and purpose
using a wide array of time-proven self-healing methods including visualization, journaling
and guided meditation to name just a few.
Early in the course, the learner creates and signs a "Healing Contract" and is
guided towards grasping the significances of this contract. In subsequent lessons, the
learner is instructed on use of various coping tools, e.g., a mapping technique to help
meet both smaller goals (e.g., getting to a support meeting next Tuesday) and larger
goals (e.g., finding new meaning in their life). As one proceeds through the lessons,
ssues such as depression, isolation, and finding and keeping support are addressed.
Steve Wachtel of California, who suffered brain damage after a stroke, exclaimed,
"This course was exhilarating for me to read. The writer put many of my vague
feelings and concept into succinct words. He seems to hit the nail on the head over and
over again. I have printed out the entire course to keep as a reference." Students
are invited to post messages for the instructor and each other in an online discussion
forum. Here they can connect with each other for support and to share experiences.
Throughout the course, Dr. Soissons-Segal weaves uplifting quotes and inspiring stories
of others who have successfully navigated the muddy waters of a disability or debilitating
illness. People who have discovered and learned to embraced their "abilities"
versus their "disabilities."
Caretakers and spouses can also benefit from this uplifting course with its lesson-by-lesson
glimpse into the emotional, spiritual and psychological hurdles their loved one facse coupled
with coping suggestions. Priced at $24.95, the course is an affordable tool for ones arsenal
in coming to terms with their disability or debilitating illness. And it serves as a resourceful
lesson-by-lesson guide for finding joy in coping after a disability or debilitating illness has
knocked you for a loop.
