JUICE: A Recipe to Start Your Day Right
By Deborah Redfern

Part of my personal feng shui ritual includes spending time at the beginning of the day in activities that help me feel more balanced and whole. When you take care of yourself in this way, you will feel more healthy and balanced. It will give you more energy, clarity, insight and inspiration.

Begin by choosing color.
Choose the color(s) you are going to wear for the day with intention. Make your decision based on what your energy needs of the day are. If your energy is low and you have a high activity day ahead of you, wear something red or orange. For some additional self-nurturing, wear something pink. For unwinding and relaxation, choose blue and, for days that require clear communication, try wearing turquoise. For more ideas on the healing uses of color, refer to my Self-Healing Expressions course Healing with Feng Shui and Color

A Five-Step Ritual
Next, begin this five step ritual I call JUICE, which is a self care program par excellence!

JUICE stands for...

Journaling
Undoing
Inspiration
Connecting
Exercise

Think of it as the description of a perfect day, a day when you've taken time to do things that nurture you on all levels. And because you do them in the morning, you pay yourself first in your self-care bank, and it helps you give back more to others with grace and generosity.

J

ournaling. I follow The Artist's Way method of writing three full pages longhand without stopping, and without censoring my thoughts. Through journaling you can let go of internal clutter and outline your day. Did you know that people who journal visit the doctor fewer times? Getting rid of internal clutter through writing has measurable health benefits. You can give yourself topics to write on, or you can write free-flow.

U

ndoing is the art of doing nothing. You might feel that you do nothing a lot of the time, or experience a feeling of non-productive time, but it is actually quite difficult to do absolutely nothing. Try it! You might find that you start looking at the clock to see if it is time to 'do something' yet. The time spend undoing is unstructured. It is time to devote to inner stillness. You might meditate, watch the sun rise, watch the rain or look for shapes in the clouds.

I

nspiration is anything that inspires, uplifts and motivates you. You may feel inspired by your journaling and undoing activities, but there are times when you need something extra, and then you can consciously focus on something that inspires you. You can try meditating for a few minutes, or envisioning yourself in a beautiful place in nature. You might listen to some uplifting music or read an inspiring poem or quote. I often choose a card from one of my card decks to give me inspiration as I start my day. My favourite card deck at the moment is Doreen Virtue's Archangel Oracle Cards.

C

onnecting. Plan how you are going to make your connections for the day - through communing with nature, or with a particular person or, ideally, both. Connecting with nature or other people makes us more healthy and whole because it brings us into the present. We are more aware when we are sharing with someone in a meaningful way. Even the simple act of making eye contact and giving a genuine smile to the people you interact with will improve your day.

E

xercise is a reminder to move your body through its entire range of motion. It does not have to be a commitment to spend an hour at the gym. It can be as simple as taking five minutes to do the Sun Salutation series, stretching, or even dancing with abandon to get the blood flowing.

Some days I do more of one thing and less of another, but as long as I get some JUICE first thing in the morning, my ability to handle whatever the day has in store for me is enhanced, and I feel good about myself.

The individual parts of the JUICE self care program sound like small things. They are, but they are also very big because they take time to do. Every day I have to make it a priority and a conscious choice to take this time for myself, regardless of how busy my day is.

Give yourself permission, every day, to take yourself and your interests seriously. Take time for yourself, and allow yourself to be wholly selfish, to do what you need to do to nurture yourself. When you consider the benefits --- well being, peace and harmony, being more present and more loving - self care is an act of love that cares both for you and everyone in your life.
