Write A Way: Journey to Creativity
Forms, Forms and more forms
By Sandra Lee Schubert
Daily we are inundated with forms to fill out. There are forms for taxes, to get married, to join an online group, or to participate in
writing contests.
While forms can occupy our time, using a form in writing can give our words structure.
Writing prompt ideas & resources: Try writing in a form. In poetry, play with an acrostic or a more complicated form such as
Terza Rima.
Two excellent resources are:
The New Book of Forms: A Handbook of Poetics
by Lewis Turco and
The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics
by Alex Preminger (Editor), et al. Even if you don't write poetry or never use a form, trying something different will challenge you and open new pathways for more creativity.
This month's column is abbreviated so we can spotlight our
writing contest winner.
The Writing Contest
I want to thank everyone who submitted prose to our first writing contest. It was great fun to watch the submissions pour in. I want to thank the judges, John, Don, David and Phyllis who took the time and care to read each submission. Deciding who will win was not an easy task. Every entry is precious for the care and time it took each person to sit down and write.
Congratulations to our winner Kenneth W. Bledsoe, who based his story entitled Confronting Ghosts on the cabin. The winning entry has been posted
here.
